Milestones
1981
  AWIC founded.
  First issue of its quarterly journal, Writer and Illustrator published.
  Competition for writers and illustrators started.
1983
  AWIC Home Library Project launched. Libraries opened in the homes of AWIC members.
1984
  Seminar on Promotion of Children’s Literature.
1985
  First collection of stories for children titled More Short stories for Children published with
     collective effort.
  Indo-Soviet Seminar on Literature for Children.
1989
  Two AWIC collections, Mystery Stories and More Mystery Stories for Children (in English)
     published.
  Pictorial Hindi dictionary for children Sachitra Hindi Bal Shabdkosh published. Prepared
     by 16 members of the Association, it has 326 pages, 1728 words and 1002 four colour
     illustrations.
  AWIC participated in the Bologna Book Fair for the first time. Displayed 270 books and
     artwork of 25 artists.
  Children’s Choice Award (English) introduced.
  Instituted Bal Priya Puraskar (Hindi) for illustrators, writers and publishers. All the
     members of the jury for these awards are children.
  Seminar on Better Books for Children and an Exhibition on selected children’s books.
1990
  AWIC also becomes the Indian Section of the International Board on Books for Young
     People (Indian BBY)
1991
  First exhibition of original artwork of Indian Illustrators held.
  IBBY Asahi Reading Promotion Award conferred on AWIC for AWIC Home Library
     Project.
1992
  AWIC set up an exhibition at the Bologna Book Fair of 170 original illustrations of 59
     Indian artists, titled Words and Colours Go Together. India was Guest of Honour.
  Catalogue titled Indian Illustrators 1962-92 published.
1993
  Annual award for writers, illustrators and researchers instituted.
  First National Exhibition of Picture Books for Children.
1994
  AWIC collected and send 400 titles of Indian children’s books to Osaka ICL, on their
     request.
  Seminar on International Understanding Through Children’s Books.
1995
  Literacy Project launched under the AWIC Literacy Project, two schemes ‘Buy, Teach and
     Gift’ and ‘Teach and Gift’ were launched.
  Hindi alphabet book published.
1996
  Exhibition of books on the theme ‘Peace’ organised.
  First Souvenir released titled 15 Years of AWIC (1981-96).
  Seminar on Children’s Literature in South East Asia.
1997
  National Seminar and Exhibition on the Panchatantra organised.
1998
  26th IBBY Congress Meet with theme ‘Peace Through Children’s Books’ held at
     New Delhi.
  Another Hindi alphabet book supported by JapanBBY released.
1999
  AWIC opened Children’s Bookshop in Bal Bhawan, New Delhi.
2000
  AWIC set up the theme pavilion at the 14th World Book Fair along with National Book
     Trust.
  Tamil alphabet book published.
2001
  Indo-Austrian Seminar and Exhibition on Picture Books from Austria and SAARC
     countries.
  Distribution of 11,000 books in 20 schools of Gujarat’s earthquake devastated areas.
  English alphabet book published.
  Gujarati alphabet book published.
  Urdu alphabet book published.
2002
  Bengali alphabet book published.
  Stories from Across the Globe, an anthology of stories from IBBY Sections around the
     world published.
  Exhibition in Vienna on Picture Books from India and SAARC Countries.
2003
  National Seminar on Storytelling to Promote Children’s Literature.
  Release of Creators of Children’s Books in India, a compilation of writers, illustrators,
     publishers, magazines, awards, researchers and institutions in 17 Indian languages
  Release of Meri Nayee Kitaab, Hindi book for beginning readers.
  Release of Oriya alphabet book.
  Release of Telugu alphabet book.
  Another bookshop--Children’s Book Corner, opened at Greater Kailash-II, New Delhi.
2004
  Once Upon a Time in India, an anthology of Indian folktales, published in collaboration
     with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)
2005
  Asian Conference on Storytelling to Promote the Reading Habit in Children.
  Celebration of International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) in India
  Release of poster ‘Books are My Magic Eyes’.
  National Convention on Children’s Libraries.
2006
  AWIC Silver Jubilee Celebrations.
  Setting up 30 Libraries in Tsunami affected region of Andhra Pradesh, India.
2007
  Establishing IBBY-AWIC Libraries in Arunachal and Mandi Village, New-Delhi.
  International Conference on Storytelling to Promote Peace, Cultural Integration and the
     Reading Habit in Children
  Kathaavachan-Storytelling Project launched
2008
  Indo-Russian Seminar – Cross Cultural Flow of Children’s Books New Delhi.
  AWIC Book-Release of The Road to Peace – stories that show the way.
  Silver Jubilee of AWIC Children’s Library Project & Workshop for Librarians.
  Revival of AWIC Literacy Project, Gift-a-Book Programme distribution of books to 5000
     school children.
  IBBY-AWIC Library in Jaipur established.
  “Pen and Brush Magic” – An Exhibition of Picture Books and Posters including ICBD
     Posters from IBBY National Sections.
  AWIC Book-Release of Padhenge aur Hansenge- Anthology of Humorous stories in Hindi.
  Guide to Create a Children’s Library (English & Hindi) published by UNICEF.
2009
  UNICEF-AWIC Workshop on Children’s Libraries held at Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.
  AWIC Book Therapy Project launched.
  Workshop on Book Therapy.
  IBBY-AWIC Children’s Library established in Daman.
  AWIC Book Reading Project launched.
